Incorporating costs, thresholds and spatial extents for selecting stream bioindicators in an ecotone between two Brazilian biodiversity hotspots

چکیده
Biomonitoring is critical for characterizing and monitoring status, spatial patterns, long-term trends in the ecological condition of freshwater ecosystems. The selection cost-effective bioindicators a step establishing such programs. Key indicator considerations are reliable response to anthropogenic disturbances, high benefit-cost-ratio sensitivity at multiple extents. We evaluated non-linear responses Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera Trichoptera (EPT) fish effects native vegetation loss within buffers 100 m 1000 assessed sampling processing costs involved each assemblage. sampled 37 neotropical stream sites Formoso River network, karstic region Bodoquena Plateau, midwest Brazil, lying ecotone between Cerrado Atlantic Forest biological hotspots. used TITAN (threshold taxa analysis) identify six taxa, four EPT genera two species. had low negative thresholds loss, whereas species positive thresholds. Thresholds were lower than EPT. most sensitive taxon (Macronema, Trichoptera) threshold 0% nearly 40% buffers. For richness, we found no buffer extent nor total cost biomonitoring was US$ 3,616; fish, 1,901. Although less expensive EPT, they did not respond negatively their started 48%, level that highly disruptive Therefore, do recommend using monitor on headwater streams Plateau. 52% more assemblage monitoring, it detected earlier impacts biota, especially buffer. early warning indicators Plateau headwaters.

Incorporating evolutionary history into conservation planning in biodiversity hotspots.
There is increased evidence that incorporating evolutionary history directly in conservation actions is beneficial, particularly given the likelihood that extinction is not random and that phylogenetic diversity (PD) is lost at higher rates than species diversity. This evidence is even more compelling in biodiversity hotspots, such as Madagascar, where less than 10% of the original vegetation r...

in the area of automotive engineering there is a tendency to more electrification of power train. in this work control of an induction machine for the application of electric vehicle is investigated. through the changing operating point of the machine, adapting the rotor magnetization current seems to be useful to increase the machines efficiency. in the literature there are many approaches wh...

Hotspot analysis is the identification and ranking of countries or other geographic regions on the basis of biodiversity. Hotspots have exceptional biodiversity per unit land area. This paper introduces a new method of hotspot analysis that ranks hotspots on the basis of biodiversity and anthropogenic threats to biodiversity. These threats are represented by socioeconomic factors such as human ...
متن کاملWarfare in biodiversity hotspots.
Conservation efforts are only as sustainable as the social and political context within which they take place. The weakening or collapse of sociopolitical frameworks during wartime can lead to habitat destruction and the erosion of conservation policies, but in some cases, may also confer ecological benefits through altered settlement patterns and reduced resource exploitation. Over 90% of the ...
متن کاملPerformance and Consistency of Indicator Groups in Two Biodiversity Hotspots
BACKGROUND In a world limited by data availability and limited funds for conservation, scientists and practitioners must use indicator groups to define spatial conservation priorities. Several studies have evaluated the effectiveness of indicator groups, but still little is known about the consistency in performance of these groups in different regions, which would allow their a priori selectio...
